Artist "CEL" and this hallmark are shown on pages 227 and 266 in Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). CONDITION : Excellent vintage condition ~ no dings/dents to the silverwork ~ no chips, cracks or damage to turquoise stones (only naturally occuring matrix) or coral cabochons, or amethyst cabochon (only naturally incurring inclusions inherent to Mexican amethysts) ~ minor surface scratches consistent with normal wear and age ~ no damage noted ~ just about PERFECT used condition! HALLMARKS : "STERLING, CEL, 925, MEXICO, ME-02". Necklace: Inside circumference when closed is 24", width is 1/8", and weight of the brooch/pendant, necklace and pendant adaptor is 27.3 grams. T his is an extraordinarily well made pendant necklace in a timeless and artistic design ~ it is elegant art-to-wear ~ it is heirloom and collector quality ~ quite simply, THE BEST!!! SIZE: Pendant/Brooch: Length is 2-3/4", width is 2-1/2". I am including a substantial vintage oxidized sterling silver chain so that the winner can immediately wear this piece as a necklace. My jeweler made a sterling silver custom pendant adaptor that is worn over the pin portion of the clasp so that this piece may also be worn as a pendant. The silver has acquired a wonderful, soft patina that reflects the shadows created by the depth of the designs. ![]() This technique is extremely time consuming and can take an artist an entire day or many days to complete just one piece. Repoussage is a metal working technique in which a malleable metals (such as sterling silver) is shaped or ornamented by hammering from the reverse or under side. There are five silver dangles hanging from the second design element ~ the dangles are accented with turquoise cabochons that are in raised bezel settings, silver wirework with bead accents. The next design element has bezel set turquoise cabochons and deep coral cabochons that are surrounded with hand wrought scrolling wirework and tiny silver bead accents. The palomas and the amethyst cabochon are surrounded with hand wrought silver wire scrollwork, braided silver accents, silver beads and channel set turquoise stones. The top of the brooch has an oval cabochon of rich, dark purple amethyst that is flanked on either side with silver repousse palomas (doves) that have deep coral cabochon eyes. The brooch is made of seven separate design elements that culminate into an extraordinary work of art. ![]() ![]() This exceptional brooch/pendant is masterfully crafted and it is exquisitely detailed. After Matilde Poulat passed away in 1960, her nephew, RICARDO SALAS, who had worked by her side throughout her entire silver career, carried on the tradition of "MATL" jewelry, signing his pieces "Salas and/or MS-12" ~ Ricardo Salas passed away in 2005 and the MATL jewelry continues to be made almost entirely by family members who were trained by Ricardo Salas. Poulat was a painter and designer before becoming a silver artist. MATILDE POULAT, was a master designer and silver artist and opened MATL in 1934.
